Orthopaedic Upper Extremity Fellowship
Duration: 1 year July 1 – June 30th
Location: McMaster University – St Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton/Brantford General Hospital
McMaster University is pleased to offer an Orthopedic Upper Extremity Research and Clinical Fellowship to provide fellows with the knowledge, skills, and tools they need to be leaders in the field of Upper Extremity. Two fellowship positions are offered yearly.
The fellowship offers comprehensive care of the shoulder elbow and wrist. The fellowship includes rotations with five fellowship trained surgeons allowing for high volume exposure to all aspects of upper extremity surgery. Additionally, the fellowship allows for additional training in hand and wrist surgery as well as advanced ultrasound techniques for diagnostic and therapeutic injections. The Fellowship supervisors are engaged members of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, Arthroscopy Association of Canada, ISAKOS, AOSSM, AANA, AAOS, Canadian Shoulder and Elbow Society members amongst others, and will encourage Fellows to participate similarly.
Fellows will gain significant training with respect to research methodology during their training. Each of the fellows will have dedicated research time and will work closely with one or more faculty members to develop a research plan. We offer research opportunities in both clinical and basic science investigation. The group offers significant research expertise with over a dozen ongoing randomized controlled trials.
Our teaching program includes:
· Weekly conferences in sports medicine and shoulder surgery.
· A monthly journal club and case conferences.
· Open access to wet lab for skill development.
The fellowship consists of rotations with assigned faculty for the first half of the year. The second half of the fellowship allows for further exploration and case exposure based on fellow interest. The majority of the fellowship will be completed at St. Josephs Healthcare Hamilton with rotations at Brantford General Hospital. Lab experience is provided and is open to the fellow for use as needed. Two to four OR sessions and 1-2 clinic sessions are provided weekly. The Fellow will assist with ward duties and surgical aftercare of inpatients and will participate in on-call duties for emergency care as well. Protected research time is provided.
The Fellow will be responsible for facilitating one Grand Rounds session (minimum) to all members of MacOrtho and will take an active and engaged role in resident arthroscopy and upper extremity labs, weekly sports education rounds and annual journal club as well as the Golden Horseshoe sports rounds. By the end of the fellowship the fellow will be highly proficient in all aspects of upper extremity surgery including open and arthroscopic reconstruction of the shoulder elbow and wrist.
