Dr. Olufemi R. Ayeni
MD, PhD, MSc, FRCSC
Professor, Director of MacSports Medicine, Division Head of Orthopaedic Surgery
Dr Ayeni is a professor and academic head of orthopaedic surgery at McMaster University. He was recently named the Second President-Elect of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, and is a Tier-2 Canada Research Chair in Joint Preservation Surgery. He is currently the medical director for the Hamilton Tiger Cats (Canadian Football League) and Forge FC (Canadian Premier League) and previously served as the assistant team physician for the New Jersey Nets (National Basketball Association). He has published over 400 academic publications in sports medicine as well as several textbooks focused on sports medicine/research. His research addressing sports medicine related injuries has been funded by major organizations (CIHR, AANA, AOSSM). He is considered a leading authority on hip injuries and conditions in the young adult as this is a substantial portion of his clinical practice. He has spoken widely across the globe on evidence based approaches to evaluate and treat hip related syndromes and other conditions.
Dr. Devin Peterson
MD, FRCSC
Dr. Peterson is the Chief of Paediatric Surgery at Hamiton Health Sciences, an orthopaedic surgeon and Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario. He has been on staff at McMaster University Medical Centre/McMaster Children’s hospital since 2000 and specializes in Pediatric Orthopedics as well as Sport Medicine for both children and adults.
Dr. Peterson worked as a team physician with the McMaster Marauder’s Football team for over a decade, and is Lead Surgeon with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats Football Club. He has served as an orthopaedic examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, Chair of the Sport Medicine Section of the Ontario Medical association, and is currently the Orthopedic Clerkship Director for undergraduate medical students at McMaster University.
Dr. Darren de SA
MD, MBA(c), FRCSC
Dr. de SA is an orthopaedic surgeon from Hamilton, Ontario and Assistant Professor at McMaster Unviversity whose clinical scope includes adult and paediatric sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery, and trauma. He has a special interest in complex knee reconstruction.
Dr. de SA is also an Associate Editor for the Knee Surgery, Sport Traumatology and Arthroscopy (KSSTA) Journal, Program Director of the Surgical Foundations Program, and is the Principal Investigator for the worldwide SQuASH study!
He completed both his medical and orthopaedic surgical residency training at McMaster University. He completed a Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery Fellowship under the mentorship of Drs. Freddie H. Fu and Volker Musahl at the University of Pittsburgh. In this latter role, he acquired extensive experience as Assistant Team Physician for the Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL) and worked collaboratively with the medical teams for the Pittsburgh Steelers (NFL) and the University of Pittsburgh collegiate athletics. He is currently the Associate Head Orthopaedic Surgeon for the Hamilton Forge FC (Canadian Premier League), and an Assistant Team Physician with the Hamilton Tiger Cats. Moreover, Darren has completed young adolescent and paediatric trauma subspecialty training at Western University in London, Ontario, in addition to adult musculoskeletal trauma training at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.
Dr. Matthew Denkers
MD, FRCSC
Dr Denkers is a member of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at McMaster University. He completed an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology and a professional degree in Physical Therapy at McMaster University while playing varsity football. He then proceeded to complete his medical school and orthopaedic surgical training at McMaster University as well. He completed his initial fellowship training in Arthroscopy at the University of Calgary with a second fellowship in Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery also at the University of Calgary. His clinical and research interests include: Arthroscopic Shoulder and Knee Joint Preservation Surgery, Orthopaedic Adult Trauma Surgery and Surgical Education.
Dr. Rick Ogilvie
MD, FRCSC
The original sports trained orthopaedic surgeon in Hamilton. Dr. Ogilvie arrived in Hamilton in 1985 after two fellowships and has been taking care of local athletes along with Dr. David Levy ever since. As Head of Orthopaedics he help build the current group by encouraging young talented trainees to also do sports fellowships and return to Hamilton with new skills as well as bring on individuals from other centres too have a well balanced group. Currently Dr. Ogilvie sub specialized in knee and ankle issues.
